The Employee Spotlight is a monthly feature that highlights the great talent we have here at Angus Systems. For this month’s Employee Spotlight, we are featuring Yanis, an animal lover with a passion for building legos.
What is your education and background?
have a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, in China. I then earned an advanced diploma from Seneca College in Accounting and Finance, here in Toronto. I took some time off to go back to China for a couple months and sometime after my return, I started working for Angus Systems.
What is your role at Angus Systems and what are your main responsibilities?
My current role is the Accounting Manager in the Finance department. My main responsibilities include overseeing, coaching and mentoring the team members, and acting as the main point of contact when dealing with issues involving other departments. I also am pulled into projects involving my superiors, like our CFO, to provide accurate and complete monthly financial statements and specific reports.
How have your responsibilities expanded since you started working with the company?
I have had the opportunity to advance in my career here at Angus Systems as I originally started as a Billing Coordinator. I was able to get familiar with the systems we use with accounting as well as getting to know Angus Anywhere and our clients. After a few months, my title then changed to Staff Accountant. Finally, in 2018 I was promoted to Manager. It is nice to realize that we are the final contact in the whole process. It starts with a phone call and works its way through the other departments to my team in Finance.
What do you like most about working at Angus Systems?
The best thing about Angus Systems is its culture! The people here are laid back and willing to do what they can to help one another. We are highly productive and efficient, and we have a low turnover because of our culture, and actually contributes to the company’s success.
What are some of the things you’ve learned while working here?
I have had the chance to learn about commercial real estate, Angus AnyWhere, what it does and how we help people on a day-to-day basis.
On a personal level, I have, and am still learning how to better communicate with different cultures. Back home, in China, I never really dealt with different people of different backgrounds, and everyone spoke Chinese! When I came here, I was immersed into a culturally diverse city and workplace where I sometimes experience challenges with language barriers.
Is there some contribution that you’re proud of?
Although I am proud of all of the work that I do here one of my biggest contributions was my involvement in our transition from paper accounting to digital. I am happy to help make the finance department more efficient. Going paperless has made us more secure and productive given the time savings.
Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I love animals! If I could, I would love to own an animal shelter for homeless dogs and cats!
If you weren’t working at Angus Systems, what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t working at Angus Systems, I would most definitely work in an animal shelter caring for animals in need.
What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?
My husband and I collect and build Lego! We created a space in our basement where we build mini versions of things like, a mini bookstore or a police station. The one good thing that came from being at home a lot for these past two years, is that we have had a lot of time to build. We have so many different sets, and so much more to go!
