In today’s spotlight we meet Karen, Director of Quality Assurance & IT Operations. Karen is a graduate of the University of Waterloo and has been a part of the team for over 15 years. Time flies when you’re busy working!
Karen, what is your education and background?
I studied math at the University of Waterloo and have been working in technology since. My first job in the industry was working as a Systems Support Specialist during my co-op terms. Prior to joining Angus, I was a Quality Assurance Analyst at a software company focusing on theatre lighting design.
How long have you worked at Angus Systems?
I’ve been with the company for just over 15 years. I started as a Senior Quality Assurance Analyst, and a year later I started overseeing the Quality Assurance team. In the summer of 2019, I took on the added responsibility of overseeing the IT department.
What are your primary responsibilities?
I am involved in setting the vision, strategy and hiring for the QA team. Currently, my QA focus is mainly on Angus Anywhere Gen5 testing strategy. With the IT team, I oversee all IT infrastructure, DevOps and Security policies across the company.
Have your responsibilities expanded since you started working here at Angus?
I started with the company 18 years ago as a QA analyst. Back then, I was mainly involved in the day to day testing of earlier versions of Angus Anywhere. I went through a few role changes during my tenure, and as a result I became more involved in management. 3 years ago I took on additional responsibility as Director, IT Operations where my responsibilities changed significantly. In addition to overseeing QA, I am also responsible for a new domain, ITOps. This was a very interesting journey and I am very grateful for the opportunities.
Is there a contribution you are most proud of?
I feel a sense of accomplishment, every time we resolve a production issue in a timely manner; and ensure we all learned from the lesson. It means I’ve done my job well!
What do you like best about working at Angus Systems?
I’d have to say it’s the people; the people I work with are terrific. Probably a lot of employees feel that way here. We are a big family! Also, although we’ve grown over the years (we now have over 100 employees), we are still somewhat small in size compared to most tech companies and I like the additional flexibility you find in smaller companies.
What would people would be surprised to know about you?
I don’t know how to cook at all! I learned at a young age that I didn’t really have a head for it. It’s a good excuse to try restaurants and visit family and friends more often!
What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?
I really enjoy traveling; I like to explore different places, but also try to go the Caribbean every year to make sure that I relax. Other than travel, I do a little skiing, and I like to play games on my iPhone.
