Queenie, Quality Assurance Manager

In this month’s Employee Spotlight, we introduce you to Queenie, a Quality Assurance Manager and a fan of K-Pop music.

What is your education and background?

I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce. Then I earned a diploma at Seneca College focused in digital multimedia arts, where I learned how to use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and some 3D animation. I started working in the field of Quality Assurance (QA) testing through a networking referral and have stayed in the field ever since.

What is your role at Angus Systems and what are your main responsibilities?

As Quality Assurance Manager, my main responsibilities include overseeing projects, coaching team members on test strategies and test planning, implementing process improvements for releases and testing, as well as working with various departments across the company on new releases.

How have your responsibilities expanded since you started working with the company?

When I first started here I was doing mostly manual, hands-on testing. During the past few years, I have worked on load testing and automated testing, while being a team lead on projects. In 20219, I was promoted to Quality Assurance Manager, leading to expanded responsibilities (as mentioned above).

What do you like most about working at Angus Systems?

There are a lot of things I like about working at Angus Systems. The central location makes for a reasonable commute. I also like the sharing culture, people tend to share food and good shopping deals that they know of.

What are some of the things you’ve learned while working here?

When I first started I didn’t know any SQL (a database query script) at all, but now I am quite proficient with it. I’ve also learned how to use some testing tools that I had not used before in previous QA positions. One of the philosophical things I’ve learned while working in Quality Assurance at Angus Systems is that as human beings we are all prone to errors. The only sensible way to deal with a mistake is to admit it and learn from it. It is more respectful to apologize than to cast blame.

Is there some contribution that you’re proud of?

Within my first few years here, I helped to streamline the testing process we continue to use today. I also reorganized a testing automation script to make it easier for the team to understand. Currently, I am coaching team members toward finding a more efficient way for them to work on their own. I will be very proud of this contribution once it’s completed.

Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?

I like to sing karaoke.

If you weren’t working at Angus Systems, what would you be doing?

I would be a stay-at-home mom to my two kids.

What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?

I like to read manga and mystery books, listen to K-Pop music, and go hiking.
