The Employee Spotlight is a monthly feature that highlights the great talent we have here at Angus Systems. This month we’re featuring Sooraj, Software Developer.
What is your education and background?
I completed my Bachelor of Information and Technology in India, and then I came to Canada in 2010. I studied Information Technology Solutions, a post-graduate program, at Humber College. I worked at two other companies before joining Angus Systems.
What is your role at Angus Systems and what are your main responsibilities?
I am a part of the Development team, and I work mainly on the front-end of the software. My responsibility involves creating a beautiful user interface for all of the products that we have at Angus Systems. I take requirements that the Business Analysts provide me with and try to replicate them by making functional components that can be used throughout the system.
How have your responsibilities expanded since you started working with the company?
Absolutely! I’ve been working here for about 4 years, and when I started I had less responsibility. As I learned more about the system by working on smaller projects, I learned more about the different modules, and then I was given more responsibility. During my second year here I have worked on about 7 projects, which was a jump from my first year when I worked on one project. I’m hoping to keep doing the same good work and to continue to learn new technologies.
“In my field, there are a lot of new technologies coming out, so that’s something that every software developer wants to do – learn something new. There’s a good opportunity to learn here.”
What do you like most about working at Angus Systems?
Everyone is treated fairly and you can ask anyone for help here and actually receive it. In meetings, you can make your points and you will be listened to, which makes this a great environment to learn and grow.
What are some of the things you’ve learned while working here?
Over the years at Angus, I have learned to work in highly communicative and collaborative environment. I have learned to work with prototypical model, where any project can start with an idea and a small prototype and can evolve in a great product with time, planning and all around effort. I learned the importance of testing during the implementation and how to write and execute unit tests. I have also learned the importance of inter-team dialogue, especially between the business analysts and developers.
Is there some contribution that you’re proud of?
I worked on creating a new internal web app that allows marketing team to publish marketing messages and Service Alerts to Employee and Tenant with in the ESI and Service portal apps.
Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m not a champion ping pong player, but I’m very good at cricket!
If you weren’t working at Angus Systems, what would you be doing?
I might be doing freelance work or working for a charity doing the same kind of work I’m doing here. I can use my skills to contribute to good causes.
What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?
I like cooking, travelling, hiking, and watching all kinds of sports.
“It’s been a really nice journey so far, and I’m hoping to continue it for a long time!”
