In Today’s employee spotlight we meet with Matt M., Sales Engineer and adventure seeker.

Tell us a bit about yourself. What is your education and background?

I have a Mechanical Engineering degree and Entrepreneurship and business management option from the University of Ottawa. I also have a certification in Project Management.

What do you do currently and what are your main responsibilities?

As Sales Engineer at Angus Systems, I collaborate closely with the Sales & Marketing, Product and Customer Success teams on complex engagements, solution design and future roadmap as well as provide technical pre-sales support during the evaluation of our software solution.

How have your responsibilities expanded since you started working at Angus Systems?

I started working with the Angus Group of Companies back in 2002 when I joined our sister company, Angus Consulting Management Limited (ACML), as a Building Systems Operator. ACML provides facilities management services to its clients.

In 2010 I took a position with Angus Systems and my role has evolved significantly since joining the company. I was initially hired into the role of Product Lead for the Angus EECO (Energy and Environmentally Conscious Operations) product. From there, I moved into the Client Services team and now into the Sales team as a Sales Engineer.

As a Sales Engineer, I tend to assist the Sales team with demos, sales initiatives and RFPs as they come up. I act as a bridge between Sales and our Product team, providing technical expertise in unique situations as needed.

What are a few things you’ve learned while working with the company?

As Product Lead I learned a lot about the amount of work and thought that goes into the design of a product. As an Implementation Manager I learned that much of the work involved includes tasks that are beyond the actual set up of the software. I have also learned quite a bit about establishing, maintaining, and nurturing client relationships. And now as a Sales Engineer, I can use everything I have learned in my previous roles to successfully assist clients and our Sales team to help achieve their goals.

Is there a contribution that you are particularly proud of?

Any project that I can work on where, upon completion, I have developed a stronger working relationship with our client. With some clients, after we’ve been working together for several months, we’ve developed a relationship that goes beyond simply offering a service and more toward a full solution.

What do you like most about Angus Systems?

The company has a young energy. It is a very energetic and fun environment to work in. Also, there is a lot of interdepartmental collaboration.

Is there something that we would be surprised to know about you?

I would prefer to spend my vacation in the mountains over a sunny beach any day. I completed the Ironman in Lanzarote, Spain, which is ranked the seventh hardest Ironman. I had to learn how to swim properly in order to complete the race.

In addition, I teach Muay Thai and compete at the international level. I have represented Canada in 2014 (Malaysia), 2015 (Thailand) and 2016 (Sweden) at the IFMA World Championships and am proud to have hauled home two bronze medals. I have also hiked the Grand Canyon from end to end with my colleague and friend Paul.

What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?

Well, my life outside of work is very busy. Aside from Muay Thai and Ironmans, I snowboard, play soccer, mountain bike, rock climb and go on hiking excursions. I also enjoy reading non-fiction and barbecuing!
