Meet Rodrigo, a squash player and science fiction reader, who works as a Software Developer here at Angus Systems. He is our featured employee for the Employee Spotlight this month!
What is your education and background?
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, which I received in Brazil, where I lived before coming to Canada.
What is your role at Angus Systems and what are your main responsibilities?
As a member of the Product Development department, I’m responsible for the development of several web applications for Angus AnyWhere. I also contribute to the development the Service Portal.
How have your responsibilities expanded since you started working with the company?
I’ve been working at Angus Systems for 6 years – time flies! In the beginning I worked on smaller applications and now with the experience that I’ve gained throughout the years, I have worked on larger applications with respect to Angus AnyWhere. I’m always getting a better understanding of the business of the company. Web development is my main focus, which I love, but my goal is to continue learning new products in the company, to be very familiar with all the products Angus Systems has to offer.
What do you like most about working at Angus Systems?
Definitely the work environment. Besides the protocols that we have to follow as software developers and the meetings we have to attend, we have friendships and it’s very easy to work with my teammates on a daily basis. I see Angus Systems more like a small family company rather than a big corporation, and I really like this aspect.
What are some of the things you’ve learned while working here?
I’ve been working as a web developer for more than a decade and at the beginning of my time here at Angus Systems, it was a challenge because I had to learn a new set of technical skills. It was a big learning curve at the beginning because on top of learning new technology, you also have to learn the business.
Is there some contribution that you’re proud of?
In the past year I’ve been working on our Service Portal offering. Our Support team has an Admin tool to help our customers with their Service Portal I’ve been working on applications to help the Support team to create easier customizations for clients.
Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m a big fan of science fiction books.
If you weren’t working at Angus Systems, what would you be doing?
I would definitely be teaching. Back in Brazil, I was a teacher for almost 7 years. I taught logic, programming, and computer languages. Right now I don’t have the time to combine my passion for teaching with my work in software development, but perhaps during retirement I will be able to teach again.
What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?
Besides reading science fiction, I’m a big fan of competitive online video games. I also play squash once or twice a week – it’s a very good workout that’s fun and competitive so you don’t feel the intensity of the exercise while you’re playing. I also practice yoga in a studio with my wife, which helps promote relaxation.
