In this installment of our Community Partnership Series, we highlight our commitment to Habitat for Humanity, a global non-profit organization that began over four decades ago in the USA and now operates in more than 70 countries. Habitat for Humanity Canada has been improving the livelihoods of Canadian families since 1985 by providing affordable housing to lower income families. To qualify, families must be in need of better housing, willing to partner with Habitat by helping the volunteers build their own home and the homes of others, and able to make affordable mortgage payments that help fund future affordable housing initiatives. In 2017, Habitat for Humanity Canada provided 248 families with homes.1
For over 7 years, we have been a proud sponsor of Habitat and an active participant in their Greater Toronto Area’s annual Build Days. The Build Days provide us with the opportunity to partner with our long standing customer GWL Realty Advisors and together, as a team, contribute to our community. Our efforts have mainly been geared towards the Toronto community of Scarborough in areas where affordable, good quality housing is essential. On a Habitat Build Day, a team of volunteers unites with guidance from a qualified Habitat site supervisor to build a house from the foundation up, completing tasks like painting and putting up drywall. It’s a day full of hard work, sweat, and smiles that fosters teamwork all in effort to do some good in the community. Some of our employees volunteer a full day of their time on site to assist, and we’ve had a lot of repeat team members throughout the years due to the camaraderie that develops among the participants and the pride that accompanies seeing the results of all their work. This is how we, as a company, help give families living under the poverty line the opportunity to live in a decent home with the basic necessities required for a good quality of life.
