Each month, we get to know the team at Angus Systems. This month, we introduce you to Tom, an avid reader and Senior Project Manager of Data Services.
What is your education and background?
I graduated from York University, where I studied anthropology and sociology.
What is your role at Angus Systems and what are your main responsibilities?
As a Senior Project Manager for Data Services, my main responsibility is to work with clients on importing new data that comes in from other applications to Angus AnyWhere.
How have your responsibilities expanded since you started working with the company?
When I started working at Angus Systems 21 years ago, I worked with the Support team initially. As the need arose, I moved into the role of Implementation Manager for nearly 10 years. For about the last 8 years I’ve been working with Data Services.
What do you like most about working at Angus Systems?
The people. I’ve never worked with a better group of individuals, who are solely focused on a product we all believe in. When I started here, there were only about 15 of us. Now we have grown to over 90 people in the company. It is a testament to the kind of environment we have to see that many of those, who have come to work here, stay for a long time, since most of those initial 15 are still with Angus Systems.
What are some of the things you’ve learned while working here?
I didn’t have any formal training in computer technology, and I was mostly self-taught in hardware before joining Angus Systems. Over the course of my time here, I’ve learned a lot about both hardware and software.
Is there some contribution that you’re proud of?
Mostly, my contributions have been incremental. Adding to and refining existing strategies with the hope of improving the delivery of services to the customer in each of the departments in which I have worked.
Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I used to work in the restaurant business with my dad until my early 30s. Over the course of those years, we had many restaurants located mostly in downtown Toronto.
If you weren’t working at Angus Systems, what would you be doing?
I’d probably still be in the restaurant business.
What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?
I’m a collector and avid reader. I have a large collection of vinyl records, stamps, coins, books, and other memorabilia. Though I have less time for hobbies now, I still keep an eye out for items that interest me, especially new musical styles.
