For this month’s Employee Spotlight, we are featuring Rex, our Development Manager, who has been a part of the team for over 18 years!
What is your education and background?
I graduated from the University of Alberta, specializing in land and engineering surveying. After graduation, I took some post-graduate courses in business and management studies from City Polytechnic University of Hong Kong.
What is your role at Angus Systems and what are your main responsibilities?
As a development manager, my main responsibilities include managing the development team, providing guidance and coaching to developers, managing projects that are going to roll out, handling the timelines and tasks, and making sure all the releases that occur after the design phase happen smoothly for the entire project cycle.
How have your responsibilities expanded since you started working with the company?
I have been working here around 18 years, and I have always been working with the Development team. I was originally hired as a Junior Developer, and then I became a Senior Developer. Then I started managing all the releases in the role of Project Manager for about 4 years, and now I’m a Development Manager for the Development team specifically.
What do you like most about working at Angus Systems?
We have a great workflow and chain of command. Our turnaround time is fast because we communicate with each other often and efficiently.
What are some of the things you’ve learned while working here?
I’ve learned that collaboration is the key to success. In my role as a Project Manager, I need to deal with many different teams besides Development, and I have learned that collaboration, communication, and reaching a mutual understanding are all extremely important to getting good work done.
Is there some contribution that you’re proud of?
A long, long time ago when I was a Developer here, I worked on a component for the Angus AnyWhere email process (email came in, it was processed, the work order was saved, etc…). It’s still a key part of Angus AnyWhere today!
Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I immigrated to Canada in 1995. After I graduated from the University of Alberta, I went back to Hong Kong, and I worked as a law enforcing agent, more specifically an immigration officer, for 8 years.
If you weren’t working at Angus Systems, what would you be doing?
I would likely be taking some lightweight courses in university for fun. Probably in Geology or Meteorology. I like studying rocks, land, and the structure of the earth.
What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?
I like to play golf, try all kinds of food from different ethnic cuisines, and play with my dog. I also really enjoy outlet mall shopping with my wife.
