The Employee Spotlight is a monthly feature that highlights the great talent we have here at Angus Systems. Marlon is a Systems Support Specialist, who loves collecting vinyl records!
What is your education and background?
I have a computer science degree from the University of San Jose Recoletos in the Philippines. I started working at Angus Systems in 1997 as a Software Developer, then about 10 years in, I moved into the IT Operations department.
What is your role at Angus Systems and what are your main responsibilities?
As a part of the IT team, I administrate infrastructure composed of the firewall, telephone systems, and anything else technology-related in the company. I also help the users with any hardware or software issues they might have. As a team, we configure the servers for our applications and make sure they’re running in tip-top shape.
How have your responsibilities expanded since you started working with the company?
I’ve been working at Angus Systems for 20 years, and my role has changed since I started with the company because I was hired to be a Software Developer. I was once in charge of the reporting side of Development until I eventually transitioned to the hardware side working with IT. Since then, I’ve been working with IT Operations.
What do you like most about working at Angus Systems?
There’s lots to like about working here at Angus Systems! It has enabled me the chance to tackle problems head on, and expand my knowledge with the technology side of things. The environment and atmosphere is very supportive, and management is great too.
What are some of the things you’ve learned while working here?
When I was working as a Software Developer, I took it upon myself to learn new programming languages to be able to adapt to what we had going here. Then, when I transitioned to the IT Operations side, it was a steeper learning curve with regards to hardware and the new protocols with the technology that we’ve learned. There’s always new stuff to learn in our field.
Is there some contribution that you’re proud of?
I’m very proud of the way that I can assist people with whatever IT issues they have. At the same time, I get to teach them about the technology that they’re using. I do this by educating them on what the issue was and how they can prevent it in the future.
Also, from way back, I’m still very proud that we were the first to deliver a mobile solution to the market. I coded our software for the Palm Pilot, which pre-dates smartphones.
Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I have several tattoos, and I think people would be surprised to know I have tattooed myself before. It was painful and more difficult than having someone else tattoo me.
If you weren’t working at Angus Systems, what would you be doing?
I love listening to music and collecting vinyl records. There’s something in crate digging that I find therapeutic. I could spend hours browsing through records. I would consider opening my own record store.
What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?
Aside from crate digging and collecting records, I play the guitar. I also tattoo as a hobby.
