Matt C, Senior Account Executive

Our success as a company is only possible with our talented employees. This month we get to know Matt C., a Senior Account Executive.

What is your education and background?

My education is actually in computer programming, which I studied at Fanshawe College. I thought that writing code was what I wanted to do after high school, but it turns out that I prefer to be in front of people. Every role I’ve had here at Angus Systems has been client facing.

What is your role at Angus Systems and what are your main responsibilities?

As a Senior Account Executive, the retention of existing customers is a large part of the role. Angus AnyWhere is delivered using the software as a service model and is accessed through a monthly subscription, so it’s important that we keep our customers happy by providing a valuable service experience. Specifically, I am tasked with competing for new business and converting prospects into clients.

How have your responsibilities expanded since you started working with the company?

My responsibilities have expanded quite a bit. I’ve been working at Angus Systems for 15 years, so I’ve seen the company grow. I started in our Support department back in 2002, worked there for a couple years, and that just naturally evolved into a project management and training role, which is now known as Implementation. Back then, most departments we have today didn’t exist, but they emerged as the company evolved. In about 2008, I moved into the account management role, which was specifically geared toward client retention and management. Roughly 3 years ago was when I started focusing on earning new customers.

What do you like most about working at Angus Systems?

The people. It’s a family atmosphere. From speaking with friends and family, our company environment does seem quite unique. I’ve personally enjoyed the opportunity to advance my career and skills.

What are some of the things you’ve learned while working here?

I’ve never had any formal sales training, but I have learned over the last couple years that the best sales strategy is honesty. There have been occasions where clients have expressed that they wanted to work with us because they could tell I was being genuine and straightforward about the products and services we offer.

Is there some contribution that you’re proud of?

Not one contribution in particular, but I’m proud every time I acquire a new client for the company, especially in a competitive situation, which most situations tend to be.

Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?

When I come to work I have a very quiet demeanor, outside of work I’m not as quiet. I grew up playing competitive sports like hockey, baseball, football, and lacrosse.

If you weren’t working at Angus Systems, what would you be doing?

I would be involved in sports in some capacity – probably as a coach or trainer.

What are some of your personal hobbies and interests?

I still play sports in various senior leagues, but nothing competitive anymore. I’m also a multi-species angler, fishing 3 seasons of the year. My favorite place to be is in my boat searching for my next personal best musky, walleye, or small mouth bass.
